“Tradition and Innovation in Dialogue”
Call for Proposals for Graduate Poster Session and/or Lightening Talks
The University of Michigan Department of Music Education Faculty invite graduate student proposals for participation in the BTAA 2018 meeting to be held in Ann Arbor, MI October 10-12, 2018.
The theme for the conference is “Tradition and Innovation in Dialogue.” Proposals are sought to address the question: “What is the relationship between tradition and innovation in music education? Accepted presentations will examine specific contexts that invoke the richness of our established discipline while forging new ways to define and nurture musicianship through teaching and research. Formats for presentation include:
Poster Session (Thursday Oct. 11 1:30 – 2:30 PM)
Tables with tri-fold display boards and mounting materials will be provided.
Lightening Talks (Thursday Oct. 11 2:45 – 4:00 PM)
These are 12-minute presentations that focus on a single topic, example, idea, project, or technique. They differ substantially from a delivered paper in that they do not attempt to cover all aspects of their subject matter, but present one facet of an idea clearly and succinctly using graphics, images, text, and sounds. An effective “Lightening Talk” is insightful, inspiring, thought-provoking, useful, humorous, controversial, and/or enlightening.
Instructions for Contributors:
Proposals (500-1000 words) must be submitted via email as a Word attachment to the BTAA Program Committee (conwaycm@umich.edu) on or before September 15, 2018. Do not include names of authors on proposal documents. Papers may be: (a) reports of completed research or research in progress; (b) position papers on critical issues in music education; or (c) presentations of “promising” music education practices. Include a cover email stating which type of presentation format you want your proposal to be considered for (poster only, poster and lightening talk; or lightening talk only) and include the names and institutional affiliations of all presenters in the email. Proposals should include:
1). Objective or purpose of the paper or presentation
2). Brief discussion of past research related to the topic (if appropriate)
3). Mode of inquiry for research or program description for “promising” practices presentations
4). Sources of data or evidence
5). Findings
6). Conclusions and recommendations
